DIA Datacom Industry Association Calls for Strengthened Cyber Resilience

DIA PR

The Datacom Industry Association (DIA) today released a new white paper urging Europe’s rail sector to significantly reinforce its cyber resilience, as the industry undergoes a major technological shift from legacy systems—such as the Global System for Mobile Communications–Railway (GSM-R)—to the 5G-based Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).

Europe’s rail network is one of the largest in the world, spanning more than 200,000 kilometres. Under the EU’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, high-speed rail capacity is set to expand by 50% by 2030 and 250% by 2050. This growth, coupled with extensive digitalisation programmes including the European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System (ERTMS/ETCS), is unlocking new levels of interoperability, automation, and operational efficiency. At the same time, it is widening the cyber-attack surface across rail operations, signalling, and telecommunications infrastructures.
