Since the launch of its inaugural event, at the end of September in Munich,“Addressing Grand Challenges Through Communication Systems,” the Datacom Industry Association (DIA) has embarked on an ambitious journey across Europe to meet with industry leaders, researchers, and emerging innovators shaping the future of connectivity.
Building on the momentum from Munich, the DIA has since traveled extensively, meeting potential members and engaging in conversations on the evolution of communications technologies and their impact across industries. A notable stop on this European outreach tour was the 6G-XR Impact Day in Barcelona, where the DIA actively contributed to discussions about next-generation immersive connectivity.
DIA’s Secretary General, Dirk Trossen participated as a panelist in the session titled “Immersive 5G/6G Connectivity Across Vertical Industries.” The panel—moderated by Aurora Ramos Lopez of Capgemini Engineering—included distinguished experts:
- Luis Manuel Díaz de Téran, Capgemini Engineering
- Jesús Luque Muriel, MediaPro
- Francisco Javier Martinez Borreguero, Telefónica Tech / University Carlos III of Madrid
- Dirk Trossen, Datacom Industry Association
- Diego Mallada, Gestamp
The discussion highlighted how immersive technologies powered by 5G and future 6G networks will transform vertical sectors, from manufacturing and media to mobility and advanced engineering. Panelists underscored the importance of collaboration across industry and academia to accelerate innovation, ensure interoperability, and create meaningful value for European society.
Dirk Trossen stressed that organisations running critical infrastructure need firm assurances on runtime compliance, data locality, and trustworthy federated deployments. In these sectors, immersive and intelligent network services will only be viable if the supporting systems guarantee strict regulatory adherence, clear control over where data is handled, and deployment approaches that preserve safety, reliability, and trust across distributed environments.
Across these engagements, the DIA continues to champion partnerships and insights that reinforce Europe’s position at the forefront of communication systems development. By convening thought leaders, fostering dialogue, and promoting coordinated actions, the association is positioning itself as a driving force in shaping the continent’s digital future.
Further outreach took place through the DIA’s participation at the following events:
- AIOTI Days 2025 in Madrid with a participation at the panel on “IoT-Edge-6G Collaboration and Perspectives”, organised by the DIA board member Dr. Rute Sofia, joined by the DIA’s Secretary General Dirk Trossen to position the perspectives of the DIA on cloud-edge continuum.
- Huawei Connect Europe 2025 in Madrid, where Dirk Trossen moderated a session on WiFi7 to discuss advances and insights into this new generation of WiFi technology with invited industry partners as well as presenting the DIA at a booth during the event.
- Fifth Visions for Future Communications Summit in Lisbon, where Dirk Trossen presented key research challenges for future Datacom networks, including 6G, to adequately support global-scale AI services at the start of the next revision of the NetworldEurope Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda, a key input into the research policy for European Networking research in the upcoming FP10.
The DIA’s outreach tour will continue over the coming months, with further events and collaborations planned across Europe.
